WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gallup finds 5.6% of U.S. adults identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or something other than straight or heterosexual. The percentage has steadily increased since Gallup first measured LGBT identification in 2012.
More than half of LGBT adults identify as bisexual. LGBT identification is much more common among younger adults than older adults.

Additionally, Gallup finds that about one in 10 LGBT adults -- or slightly less than 1% of all U.S. adults -- are married to a same-sex partner.

Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted in 2020 with a random sample of 15,349 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±1 percentage point at the 95% confidence level. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting.
Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 70% cellphone respondents and 30% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods.
